If you're planning a drone survey in Costa Rica, one of the first questions you'll face is: LiDAR or photogrammetry? Both are powerful technologies, but they work very differently and each excels in specific situations. Choosing the wrong one can mean wasted money — or worse, data that doesn't meet your project requirements.

This guide explains both technologies in plain language and tells you exactly which one to use based on your terrain, project type, and budget.

How Each Technology Works

LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging)

LiDAR works by firing millions of laser pulses per second from the drone toward the ground. The sensor records how long each pulse takes to bounce back, creating an extraordinarily precise 3D point cloud of the terrain below. The key advantage: laser pulses can pass through gaps in forest canopy, reaching the actual ground surface beneath trees.

Our equipment — the DJI Matrice 300 RTK with Zenmuse L1 LiDAR sensor — captures up to 240,000 points per second with centimeter-level accuracy, even in Costa Rica's dense tropical forests.

Photogrammetry

Photogrammetry works by taking hundreds of overlapping photos from different angles and using software to stitch them into a 3D model. It produces stunning, high-resolution color imagery and accurate terrain models — but only where the camera can see. Dense vegetation blocks the view, so photogrammetry maps the top of the canopy, not the ground beneath it.

When to Choose LiDAR in Costa Rica

Costa Rica's terrain makes LiDAR the default choice for many projects. Choose LiDAR when:

Costa Rica Reality Check

Approximately 60% of Costa Rica's land area has some form of tree cover. For most projects outside of the Pacific dry corridor or urban areas, LiDAR is the right choice. We've seen photogrammetry surveys fail completely on land that appeared "lightly forested" from satellite imagery but was actually too dense for camera-based mapping.

When to Choose Photogrammetry in Costa Rica

Photogrammetry is the better choice when:

Can You Use Both Together?

Absolutely — and for many large projects in Costa Rica, combining both technologies gives you the best result. LiDAR provides the precise terrain model beneath vegetation while photogrammetry adds color orthophoto coverage on top. We can plan a single mission that captures both datasets simultaneously, reducing total cost compared to two separate flights.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LiDAR better than photogrammetry for Costa Rica forests?

Yes. LiDAR uses laser pulses that penetrate forest canopy to map the ground below, making it the only reliable option for densely forested terrain. Photogrammetry uses cameras and cannot see through vegetation, so it only maps the top of the canopy — not the actual ground surface.

When should I use photogrammetry instead of LiDAR?

Photogrammetry is ideal for open terrain with minimal vegetation — agricultural fields, cleared construction sites, coastal areas, and urban mapping. It produces high-resolution color orthophotos and is generally 30–50% less expensive than LiDAR.

Can you use LiDAR and photogrammetry together?

Yes, and it's often the best approach. LiDAR captures the precise terrain model beneath vegetation while photogrammetry provides high-resolution color imagery on top. Drone Survey Costa Rica can combine both in a single flight mission.

How long does a LiDAR survey take in Costa Rica?

Flight time depends on property size and terrain, but most projects between 10–100 hectares can be flown in one day. Processing and delivery typically takes 2–4 business days after the flight.
