Case Study: Baselining a Reforestation Reserve Near Puerto Jiménez

A private reserve on the Golfo Dulce side of the Osa Peninsula, mixing recovering pasture with patches of mature forest, came to us with a problem familiar to anyone running a reforestation or restoration project: they were planting and protecting tens of hectares, reporting to international donors, and enrolling parcels in Costa Rica's payments-for-ecosystem-services program — but their evidence of progress was a scatter of hand-measured ground plots that covered a tiny fraction of the land and were brutal to collect on steep, stream-cut terrain.

We flew the entire property with drone LiDAR, establishing permanent RTK ground control and capturing a baseline in a single mobilisation. Processing within 72 hours produced a bare-earth terrain model, a canopy height model, and a high-resolution orthophoto covering every hectare — the recovering pasture, the planted blocks, and the standing forest alike. We delivered the data in formats their GIS team could drop straight into QGIS.

The outcome: For the first time the reserve had a wall-to-wall, dated baseline of canopy height and cover across the whole property, not a sample. A return flight the following year measured growth and survival block by block — objective evidence for donor reporting and PSA documentation that no longer depended on extrapolating from a few plots. The terrain model also flagged erosion-prone drainages to prioritise for planting, turning the survey into a planning tool as well as a monitoring record.

Costa Rica DGAC Drone Regulations — Plus SINAC for Protected Areas

All commercial drone operations in Costa Rica are regulated by the Dirección General de Aviación Civil (DGAC). For conservation work this is not a formality: data gathered by an unlicensed operator can be challenged in a permit or certification process, and an incident in sensitive habitat creates real liability. Can a drone really map the forest floor under thick Osa Peninsula canopy?

Yes — but only with LiDAR. A LiDAR sensor fires hundreds of thousands of laser pulses per second, and a portion of those pulses slip through gaps in the canopy to strike the ground and return. By keeping only the last returns we reconstruct a bare-earth terrain model beneath even the dense primary forest of the Osa Peninsula, while the full point cloud also gives canopy height and structure.
