Costa Rica's agricultural sector — from vast pineapple plantations in the South Pacific to hillside coffee farms in the Central Valley — faces enormous pressure to produce more with less. Drone surveys give farmers, cooperatives, and agribusiness operations the data they need to make smarter decisions: which areas are stressed, where irrigation is failing, how to optimize inputs, and how much they're actually growing.

Costa Rica's Agricultural Landscape

Agriculture accounts for a significant share of Costa Rica's economy and employment, with the country exporting pineapples, bananas, coffee, palm oil, sugarcane, ornamentals, and macadamia nuts to global markets. The challenge: most of this production happens across highly variable terrain — steep slopes, river valleys, humid lowlands — where conditions can shift dramatically within a single farm.

Traditional scouting on foot is slow, expensive, and incomplete. A scout walking rows in a 50-hectare pineapple field can't possibly see every plant. A drone can map the entire field in hours with centimeter-level resolution, flagging problems before they become losses.

Key Agricultural Applications

🌱 Crop Health Mapping (NDVI & Multispectral)

Multispectral drone surveys produce NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) maps that reveal crop stress, nutrient deficiencies, water stress, and disease hotspots weeks before they're visible to the naked eye. Color-coded maps show exactly which zones of your farm need attention — allowing targeted treatment rather than blanket application.

What is NDVI?

NDVI measures plant health by comparing near-infrared and visible red light reflected by vegetation. Healthy plants absorb red light for photosynthesis and reflect near-infrared. Stressed or dying plants do the opposite. The result is a precise, pixel-by-pixel health map of your entire crop — something no ground scout can produce at scale.

💧 Irrigation & Drainage Analysis

Accurate topographic surveys identify low spots where water pools, slopes that drain too quickly, and terrain features that affect irrigation coverage uniformity. Combined with NDVI data, you can correlate crop stress patterns directly with water distribution issues — pinpointing broken drip lines, blocked channels, and poorly designed drainage before a full season is lost.

📐 Farm Boundary & Area Verification

GPS-accurate boundary surveys confirm your actual planted area for export certifications, bank financing, crop insurance, and lease agreements. Many Costa Rica farms were registered with outdated area calculations — drone surveys provide a defensible, current measurement of every field and zone.

🗺️ Terrain Modeling for Infrastructure

Planning new access roads, expanding irrigation networks, or designing drainage systems? A drone topographic survey provides the 3D terrain data your engineers need. Costa Rica's complex terrain makes this especially valuable — slopes, ravines, and seasonal streams that don't appear on any map become clearly visible in a drone-derived Digital Elevation Model.

🌾 Yield Estimation & Canopy Analysis

High-resolution orthophoto mosaics allow canopy coverage analysis, plant density counts, and biomass estimation for many crop types. For coffee and pineapple operations, repeat surveys at key growth stages can inform harvest planning, logistics staffing, and export volume projections.

🌲 Forest Inventory & FONAFIFO Compliance

Farms with forest reserves, natural corridors, or FONAFIFO payment agreements need accurate area calculations and vegetation cover documentation. LiDAR drone surveys penetrate forest canopy to map the ground beneath, providing defensible measurements for carbon credit programs, conservation easements, and regulatory compliance.

NDVI Mapping vs. Standard Photogrammetry for Agriculture

FeatureRGB PhotogrammetryMultispectral / NDVI
Crop stress detectionLimited — only visible damage✅ Detects stress weeks early
Irrigation uniformityIndirect via surface color✅ Direct water stress mapping
Topographic mapping✅ Full DEM & contoursPaired with photogrammetry
Plant count / density✅ Excellent resolutionGood at lower altitudes
Disease identificationVisible symptoms only✅ Pre-symptomatic detection
Best forMapping, infrastructure, boundariesCrop health, input optimization

For most agricultural clients, we recommend a combined approach: a photogrammetric topographic survey for infrastructure planning and a multispectral survey for crop health — both can be flown in the same mission with our equipment.

The Survey Process for Farms

Agricultural surveys follow the same rigorous process as our other survey work, adapted for farm environments:

  1. Mission planning — We review your property via satellite, confirm airspace requirements, and design the flight grid for complete coverage including field edges and difficult terrain.
  2. Ground control points (GCPs) — We place GPS-referenced targets at strategic locations across the farm for accurate georeferencing. For large farms, we use RTK in-flight corrections for efficiency.
  3. Flight & data capture — RGB and/or multispectral payloads capture overlapping imagery at consistent altitude. Most farms up to 50 ha are completed in a single day.
  4. Processing & analysis — Our GIS team processes the imagery into orthophotos, DEMs, NDVI maps, and any additional analysis products. Quality checks ensure data accuracy before delivery.
  5. Delivery & interpretation — Deliverables arrive via Google Drive within 2–4 business days. We include a written interpretation of NDVI findings and flag any areas requiring immediate attention.

Pricing for Agricultural Surveys

Agricultural drone surveys start at $1,000 USD for properties up to 5 hectares. Additional area is priced at $80/ha. For large farms over 50 hectares requiring multispectral analysis and full reporting, we offer project-based pricing with volume discounts.

Cooperatives managing multiple farms in the same region can benefit from group campaign pricing — multiple properties surveyed in a single mobilization reduces per-farm costs significantly. Contact us to discuss your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What crops benefit most from drone surveys in Costa Rica?

Pineapple, coffee, banana, palm oil, sugarcane, and macadamia operations all benefit significantly. Any crop grown at scale on complex terrain can benefit from aerial mapping for health monitoring, irrigation planning, and yield estimation.

What is NDVI and why does it matter for crop health?

NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) measures plant health using near-infrared and red light reflectance. Healthy vegetation reflects more near-infrared light. NDVI maps reveal stressed areas, nutrient deficiencies, water stress, and disease hotspots that are invisible to the naked eye — often weeks before visible symptoms appear.

How large a farm can you survey in one day?

With our DJI Matrice 300 RTK, we can cover 200–400 hectares per day depending on flight altitude, terrain, and payload. Larger operations are broken into multi-day campaigns with consistent data capture across the property.

Do you work with cooperatives and small farms as well as large operations?

Yes. We work with individual smallholders, farmer cooperatives, and large agribusiness operations. For cooperatives, we can structure group pricing where multiple farms are surveyed in a single campaign to reduce per-hectare cost.

How much does an agricultural drone survey cost in Costa Rica?

Agricultural drone surveys start at $1,000 USD for properties up to 5 hectares, with an additional $80/ha beyond that. Large farm operations over 50 hectares are eligible for project-based pricing. Contact us for a custom quote.
