San José and its surrounding cantons make up the most active construction and development zone in Costa Rica. Condominiums in Escazú, road projects in Desamparados, industrial parks in La Uruca, hillside residences in Moravia — there's always something being built, measured, or mapped. And for most of those projects, a drone survey is the fastest and most accurate way to get the data you need.

We're based in San José, so projects anywhere in the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM) come with no travel surcharge and fast turnaround. Most sites we can be on-site the next business day.

Quick answer: We provide drone surveys, lidar mapping, and aerial photography throughout San José and the entire GAM — including Escazú, Santa Ana, Alajuelita, Desamparados, Moravia, Curridabat, and Tres Ríos. Pricing starts at $1,000 USD for sites up to 5 hectares, with no travel fees for the metropolitan area.

Where We Work in San José and the GAM

The Greater Metropolitan Area covers a lot of ground — from the dense urban center of San José city out through the western corridor to Escazú and Santa Ana, south through Desamparados and Alajuelita, and east toward Curridabat and Tres Ríos. We cover all of it.

What People Use Drone Surveys For in San José

The GAM has a specific set of challenges that make drone surveys especially useful. The terrain is hilly and varied — a flat lot in Santa Ana sits very differently from a hillside condominium site in Escazú or a steep road cut in Desamparados. Traditional surveying methods struggle with these conditions. A drone equipped with lidar handles them in a fraction of the time.

Here's what we're typically hired to do in the San José area:

Construction Monitoring

Developers and project managers use our surveys to track earthwork progress, calculate cut and fill volumes, and make sure the site matches the approved plans. A single flight gives you a complete picture of where the project stands — far more useful than a tape measure and a lot more defensible if there's a dispute with your contractor.

Topographic Surveys for Building Permits

SETENA and municipal offices in San José require topographic surveys for most new construction projects. Our deliverables — contour maps, DXF files, GeoTIFFs — are formatted to work directly with your architect's or engineer's software. We include everything you need for your permit submission.

Subdivision and Cadastral Mapping

Dividing a property? Our aerial surveys give you accurate boundary data and elevation models that your land surveyor can use to finalize the subdivision plan. We work alongside licensed topographers regularly — we handle the aerial data collection, they handle the legal registration.

Road and Infrastructure Projects

Road design, drainage planning, retaining wall placement — all of these need accurate elevation data. The Ruta 27 corridor and the roads feeding into it have seen steady infrastructure investment, and we've mapped dozens of projects in that area.

Commercial Real Estate Assessment

Before buying land in Escazú or Santa Ana, a drone survey tells you exactly what you're dealing with — slope percentages, drainage patterns, buildable area. It's a small investment that can save you from a very expensive mistake.

The GAM Terrain Challenge: Why Lidar Often Makes More Sense Here

San José sits in a valley at about 1,100 meters elevation, surrounded by hills on all sides. The terrain drops sharply toward the south in places like Alajuelita, and rises steeply toward the east in Moravia and Coronado. A lot of the hillside land you'll encounter in the GAM has secondary vegetation — scrub, trees, or overgrown grass — that blocks photogrammetry from seeing the actual ground surface.

That's where lidar is worth the extra cost. The laser pulses pass through gaps in vegetation and return data from the bare earth below. For hillside construction sites or properties with any significant tree cover, lidar gives you the ground truth that photogrammetry simply can't.

For flat, open sites — parking lots, cleared construction pads, agricultural fields — photogrammetry works great and costs less. We'll tell you honestly which method your project needs when you request a quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you cover all of San José and the Greater Metropolitan Area?

Yes. We serve the entire GAM including San José city, Escazú, Santa Ana, Alajuelita, Desamparados, La Uruca, Moravia, Curridabat, Tres Ríos, and surrounding cantons. Projects in the GAM are included in our standard pricing with no travel surcharge.

How long does a drone survey take in San José?

Most projects in the San José area are completed in one to two field days, depending on size and site complexity. Data processing and delivery of your final files typically takes 3 to 5 business days after the flight. Rush delivery is available if you need it faster.

Can you survey in densely built urban areas?

Yes. Our lidar system handles urban environments well — tight lots, slopes, and areas with existing buildings are all manageable. For dense urban zones we coordinate with DGAC for any necessary clearances and adjust the flight plan accordingly.

What types of projects do you handle in the San José area?

In the GAM we most commonly work on construction monitoring, topographic surveys for building permits, land subdivision mapping, road and infrastructure projects, condominium development surveys, and commercial property assessments. If you need accurate elevation data or property mapping, we can help.

Also Serving the Rest of Costa Rica

San José is our home base, but we work nationwide. If your project is outside the GAM — in Guanacaste, Alajuela, the Caribbean coast, or anywhere else in Costa Rica — we can still get there. Travel fees apply for projects more than roughly two hours from San José; we'll include the exact amount in your quote so there are no surprises.
